What Bear Market? Stocks Stage Major Rebound

What happened to the bear market?
With all the gloom and doom on Wall Street, stocks seemed headed for yet another horrendous selloff on Thursday.
Instead, the market surprised everyone (as it tends to do) and staged a big rally.After an unsteady start, stocks gained strength and actually turned positive for the week. The S&P 500 closed up 1.62%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 1.3%, and the battered Nasdaq jumped nearly 2%.

Major oilers Exxon Mobil (XOMGet Report) , Chevron (CVXGet Report) , ConocoPhillips (COPGet Report) and Royal Dutch Shell (RDS.AGet Report) climbed, while the Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLE) added 4.1%.

Goldman Sachs (GS) announced that it will take a $1.5 billion hit in its fourth quarter tied to the settlement of a mortgage-bond case. The investigation had been related to its “securitization, underwriting and sale of residential mortgage-backed securities” around a decade ago.

GoPro (GPRO) tumbled 24% after announcing plans to cut 7% of its workforce as it continues to face weakening demand and disappointing sales. The action camera maker expects to spend $5 million to $10 million in layoff costs. GoPro also said it expects fourth-quarter sales of $435 million, below estimates of $521 million.
